Abstract (Document Summary)

The development boasted a Spanish Court shopping center with a distinctive bell tower; two clubs, the Vista del Lago and the Breakers; a ballroom complex, the Miralago; apartments; and a garage. The Teatro del Lago, escaping nearby village bans against Sunday movies, was built on the south side of the complex.

Today, just the Spanish Court and the bell tower survive at Plaza del Lago, Wilmette's upscale retail and restaurant complex at 1515 Sheridan Rd. But a month ago, building engineer Dan Mihailovich found that some 70 years of cold weather and pigeon habitation have taken their toll on the roof and support timbers of the bell tower, leaving it beyond repair.
