Every spring, fly-by-night home repair contractors migrate to McHenry County to look for easy targets--usually an elderly person living alone who apparently has a lot of cash stashed away.

But recently, the McHenry County sheriff's police caught up with one such con artist--James P. Costello, 57, of Memphis, who pleaded guilty last week to one count of aggravated home repair fraud.

Costello specialized in farm jobs, [Charles] Terrell said. At first, Costello billed [Madeleine] Dimmel for about $4,500 for legitimate work done by Costello's crew, including painting her house and shed and sealing the shed roof, Terrell said.
