Abstract (Document Summary)

Don Zimmer, a candidate to become the next Cubs manager, says he was, in effect, traded to the New York Yankees for Gene Michael in 1986.

When former Cubs president Dallas Green fired Jim Frey as manager, he also released Zimmer as a third base coach because of Zimmer's close association with Frey. A reluctant Michael was hired as Cubs manager, and Zimmer was hired to replace Michael as third base coach of the Yankees. Zimmer is now third base coach of the San Francisco Giants.

Let's review the circumstances that led to the alleged Zimmer-for-Michael transaction. Green fired Frey on June, 12, 1986. Zimmer was called in the same day and fired by Green.
