Abstract (Document Summary)

Walter "Wally" Hass, 76, who turned back the clock by bringing football back to the University of Chicago campus a generation ago, died Sunday at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, N.C.

Mass for Mr. Hass, who retired as U. of C. athletic director and moved to North Carolina in 1977, will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hendersonville.

The University of Chicago, which had been a Big 10 member since 1896, dropped football as an intercollegiate sport in 1939 because it was no longer competitive in its own conference. That same season, Mr. Hass was football coach at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
