After nearly two decades on the pop scene, Michigan's most underrated rocker has at long last notched his first No. 1 on the national singles' charts with "Shakedown," which showed unusual staying power by moving up to the top spot after spending four weeks in the Top 3.

Seger owes his current success not to the talents of his usual backing group (the Silver Bullet Band), but to the considerable chart clout of being featured in the soundtrack of a hit movie ("Beverly Hills Cop II"). And oddly enough, Seger's "Shakedown" (cowritten with Harold Faltermeyer of "Axel F" fame) now has done better than any of the many hit songs from the first "Beverly Hills Cop" soundtrack.
