Abstract (Document Summary)

This was supposed to be Whitney Houston Week on the charts, with her single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" poised to take over the No. 1 spot and her new album, "Whitney," ready to take the LP charts by storm.

All that will still happen--and probably next week. But in the meantime, a little of Houston's thunder was stolen by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, a New York City band whose hot dance hit "Head to Toe" reigns this week as the most popular song in America.

Last week, "Head to Toe"--a former No. 1 on both the dance and black lists--failed to move up from its No. 3 spot and appeared to be running out of steam. But the record had a burst in sales this week, which pushed it over last week's No. 1 (Atlantic Starr's "Always") and kept it ahead of Houston's "Dance," which could only move from No. 5 to No. 3.
