Abstract (Document Summary)

Now the Bay-area band is back on top with "Jacob's Ladder," which had just enough momentum left after spending two weeks at No. 2 to finally grab the No. 1 crown away from Bon Jovi's four-time champ, "Livin' on a Prayer."

But Lewis & Co. probably won't have much time in the limelight, because there are two fast-rising ballads already poised to take over--Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile," which leaped from No. 10 to No. 3 and is already No. 1 on the black charts; and Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram's "Somewhere Out There," an adult contemporary hit that has steadily moved up and is now No. 2 on the pop list.
