Abstract (Document Summary)

What is surprising is that they were beaten on the album charts, where the band's "Slippery When Wet" had been invincible for weeks. Now it's just a runner-up to the Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill," which muscled into the top spot after spending several weeks at No. 2. "Licensed to Ill" thus has scored two major achievements: It is the first album by a rap group to ever hit No. 1, and is the first debut album to hit No. 1 since "Whitney Houston" did it a year ago.

The No. 1 title that Bon Jovi still owns is on the singles' chart, where "Livin' on a Prayer" held off a strong challenge from Huey Lewis & the News' "Jacob's Ladder" to remain as champion for an incredible fourth week.
