Abstract (Document Summary)

In 1985, Madonna established herself as a major pop power by scoring two No. 1 hits--"Like a Virgin," which dominated the charts all through January, and "Crazy for You," which held the top spot for one week in May.

Last year, she continued her momentum by again hitting No. 1 twice--in June, with "Live to Tell," and in August, with "Papa Don't Preach," the first single released from her current "True Blue" album.

This week, she took a major step toward a third straight year of multiple No. 1 songs, because "Open Your Heart" was able to move up from No. 2 to become the most popular song in America. That ended the two-week run of Billy Vera's "At This Moment" (which dropped to No. 2) and gave Madonna her second No. 1 song from "True Blue."
