Abstract (Document Summary)

This week, the New Jersey band has achieved yet another coup by scoring its first "chart double"--that is, having the nation's No. 1 album and No. 1 single in the same week. That makes Bon Jovi the first heavy-metal group ever to be a double champion, because although hard-rock acts frequently have topped the LP list, none except Bon Jovi has had a No. 1 entry on the pop singles chart.

The song that did it for them this week is the anthem "Livin' on a Prayer," which moved up from No. 3 to end the No. 1 run of Madonna's "Open Your Heart," which dropped to No. 2. At the same time, Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" held on for a fifth straight week atop the LP charts, despite a strong challenge from the Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill," which zipped from No. 4 to No. 2 this week and could pose a significant threat next week.
