Abstract (Document Summary)

Right now there is a very big, old building in his way. It is the massive North Pier Terminal, at Lake Shore Drive between the Ogden Slip and Illinois Street, which is slated to become a cornerstone in the $3 billion Cityfront Center development in the Streeterville neighborhood.

Meers and his firm, Broadacre Management Co., won the job of renovating North Pier with a plan to convert the 82-year-old structure into a mix of restaurants, shops and offices. It will be the only rehabilitation in the 50- acre Cityfront Center, which is expected to be developed over the next 30 years.

Meers, whose offices used to be located in Tribune Tower on North Michigan Avenue, had a bird's-eye view of the North Pier Terminal every working day. The Cityfront Center land lies directly east of Tribune Tower, giving Meers plenty of opportunity to reflect on the terminal's fate.
