Just ask longtime bandleader Billy Vera of Billy & the Beaters, who tried --and failed--to have a hit in 1981 with a ballad titled "At This Moment." The song made it only to No. 79, and then quickly fell off the charts.

And now, more than five years later, "At This Moment" is an "overnight" success. This week, it vaulted all the way from No. 5 to No. 1, giving Billy & the Beaters their first real hit and ending the No. 1 bid of Robbie Nevil's "C'est la Vie," which repeated at No. 2.
