Abstract (Document Summary)

Call it close but no cigar for balladeer Billy Ocean, whose "There'll Be Sad Songs" has hit No. 1 on two charts--adult contemporary and black--but couldn't quite make it to the top of this week's main pop list.

The chart champ remains "On My Own" by the superstar duo of Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald, who now have held their No. 1 title for three straight weeks.

Another interesting battle to watch next week involves three biggies that burst into the Top 10 this week: Genesis' "Invisible Touch," which swept from No. 17 to No. 8, Janet Jackson's "Nasty," which zipped from No. 14 to No. 9, and Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," which jumped from No. 15 to No. 10. Whichever of these songs charts highest next week will likely ace the others out for future No. 1 honors.
