What had been suspected for weeks became official Friday morning when Northwestern University announced that head basketball coach Rich Falk's contract would not be renewed.

And that's about all the university would say on the matter. Falk was said to be out of town until late next week and unavailable for comment. Athletic director Doug Single released a brief statement. And even the players apparently had been told to keep their mouths closed.

"Obviously, I'm extremely disappointed that I will no longer be the men's basketball coach at Northwestern. I'm very pleased and grateful for the option to remain at Northwestern and be part of our future success in a sports administrative position," said Falk in the statement. "However, I need a few days' time to reflect on my situation and consider all options here and elsewhere.
