This week, the San Francisco group Huey Lewis and the News finally hit No. 1 on America's singles charts with "The Power of Love," ending the 14- week domination of the top spot by these foreign acts: Simple Minds, Wham, Bryan Adams, Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Paul Young and Tears for Fears.
"The Power of Love" also ended a string of disappointments for Huey and his bandmates, who saw four straight singles from their "Sports" album zip up to No. 6--and then go no higher. Apparently, it took the power of a movie soundtrack--"Love" is featured in the film "Back to the Future"--to give the News their first No. 1 hit. (Oddly enough, the last song by an American artist to hit No. 1 on the singles charts--"Crazy for You" by Madonna--was also from a movie soundtrack. That hit-producing film was "Vision Quest.")
