It's not much of a surprise, but the first No. 1 song of the new year is the same single that was on top of Billboard's last chart for 1984: Madonna's "Like a Virgin." And the first No. 1 album of the new year is another oldie: Prince's "Purple Rain," which has now been the LP leader for 22 or 23 weeks, depending on whether you count last week, when the Billboard people took a holiday break and did not publish their charts.
