Abstract (Document Summary)

This week's No. 1 single, as expected, is REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling," the latest in a series of ballads that have found success on the dance-dominated charts with a tried-and-true formula: A melody that is pretty enough for adult-contemporary listeners, with instrumentation that is strong enough for rock-oriented radio stations.

Other recent hits with this magic combination: Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" (a former No. 1); Chicago's "You're the Inspiration" (No. 3); and Jack Wagner's "All I Need" (No. 2, despite many rock programmers' reluctance to add the soap star's song to their stations' playlists).

The newest ballad to take aim at No. 1 is "One More Night," by Phil Collins, who, unlike Wagner, has no problems with the "right" rock image and thus can expect big things from this very pretty song--on rock, pop and adult contemporary charts alike.
