Abstract (Document Summary)

The first time, they did it with "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," a peppy, upbeat charmer that stayed at No. 1 for three weeks in November and December. For the follow-up, Wham switched gears with the romantic "Careless Whisper," which, after stalling at No. 3 for two weeks, finally took the No. 1 position away from another big ballad, Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is."

The American success of "Careless Whisper" is a bit belated, because the song first hit almost a year ago in Britain, and was the most popular song of 1984 in Australia. Back then, the song was not considered a Wham hit--the record label listed just George Michael as artist, without Wham partner Andrew Ridgeley.
