Around the old jail here, talk is of one thing: the couch-a handmade $22,701 eight-piece sectional that will grace the lobby of the new county jail, which is considered either a fine new correctional facility or the Glamour Slammer, depending on who's speaking.
Everyone agrees the couch is unique. The stylish jade-green, 60-foot-long supersofa was built by Marco Fine Furniture of San Francisco, whose other clients include Leona Helmsley, Donald Trump and the Sultan of Brunei.
It was paid for from the $600,000 public art budget the city was required to spend on the $53.5 million jail. Under a 1969 city ordinance, as much as 2 percent of the cost of new buildings must be spent on art accoutrements.
