Lawyers shut down courtrooms and students rioted Tuesday to protest the military ruler's annulment of presidential elections aimed at restoring civilian rule.

The unrest was the worst since Gen. Ibrahim Babangida announced last week that he was voiding the June 12 election. He ordered new elections, claiming the previous vote, which he organized, was corrupt.
