It was business as usual a year ago, when Noel Lederer, manager of Char Crews, a crystal, silver and china store, first smelled the smoke.

"We'd had a fire the week before because they were reroofing the entire section and using tar pots," Lederer said, explaining the nonchalance with which she, other employees and customers reacted initially to the fire.

Instead of a relatively easy fire to extinguish on the roof of the oldest building in the Plaza del Lago shopping center, Wilmette firemen faced an escalating inferno that ultimately brought 10 fire departments to the scene.
