Abstract (Document Summary)

The Vancouver aquarium says that it has successfully raised a killer whale calf by hand.

Aquarium Director Murray Newman said last week that the female calf, one of only 14 born in captivity, had earlier been in danger of dying of starvation when her mother failed to provide her enough milk.

The calf was christened Kyossa as part of a name-the-whale contest. The winner combined the name of the whale's mother, 16-year-old Bjossa, with that of her father Hyak, 25, who died in February.
