Abstract (Document Summary)

Northeastern Illinois University is asking its students to help fund the school's athletic department-whether they want to or not.

Northeastern currently charges a mandatory athletic fee of $32 per year for full-time students, with the funds going directly to the athletic department. The school moved up to Division I this year, but not without some pain. The basketball team carries a 2-24 record into its season finale Sunday.

Athletic Director Dennis Keihn said he hopes the fee will be raised to $64 per year within a two or three-year period, increasing fee revenue to the $450,000 range, up from its current level of $220,000. In return, the students receive free admission to athletic events.
