Abstract (Document Summary)

Stephen Dawson and Diane Christiansen, the husband-and-wife singer-songwriters of the country/pop/soul/rock group Stump the Host, have signed a deal with Polygram/Island Music Publishing.

John Titta, the publisher who signed them, says he first saw the band last August at the Midwest Music Conference and was immediately hooked. "I had absolutely no prior knowledge of that group or any of the songs," Titta says, adding that he approached Dawson after the show.

Dawson says the deal, handled for the band by lawyer David Bagdade, is a flexible and advantageous one. "It was very generous of them," Dawson says. "It really shows their faith in us." In a publishing deal, the band receives an advance and the publisher and band split royalties from either the band's recordings or versions by other artists with whom the publisher is allowed to place the songs.
