Abstract (Document Summary)

The big winner was songwriter Michael Bolton, who moved all the way up from No. 4 to score his first No. 1 pop single with the ballad "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," which didn't even crack the Top 10 when Laura Branigan recorded it back in 1983. Bolton's victory came at the expense of two hot dance tracks: Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam" (up from No. 3 to No. 2) and Janet Jackson's much-hyped "Rhythm Nation" (down from No. 2 to No. 6), both of which are now out of contention for top honors.
