Abstract (Document Summary)

Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove has been named state champion in the junior high school mathematics contest, and Stephen Wang, a 7th grader from Thompson Junior High School in St. Charles, has been named the individual winner.

Avery Coonley School and Stephen won the fifth annual MathCounts state contest for junior high youngsters. The contest culminated a season of competition among four-person teams of 7th and 8th graders from more than 500 Illinois schools.

Robert Lindahl, Thompson's principal, said Stephen is so immersed in mathematics that he begins his school day at 7:30 a.m. at nearby St. Charles High School with a course on analytical geometry, then is bused to the junior high for his regular classes.
