Abstract (Document Summary)

If you're still breathing at sunset, "Rapture" has passed you by. Rapture is a cataclysmic prelude to Christ's return, supposedly evidenced by millions of heavenly departures among true believers. Forecast by NASA engineer Edgar Wisenant, who used mathematics and biblical interpretations to predict this Rosh Hashanah as the Big Day, it caused some preachers to work overtime with baptisms. (Just to be safe, avoid elevators until the 6 o'clock news.)

Not exactly anticipating Rapture's call are America's prince and princess of darkness. Anton Szandor LaVey, high priest of San Francisco's Church of Satan, lived with Diane Hegarty for 22 years. Now they are squaring off in a palimony suit over household property. How about a black Madonna sculpture or an antique red-devil ashtray or a "painting of a skull in a field?" (No? Try the tombstone coffee table, magic mirror and shrunken head.) Hegarty also claims royalties for her work on LaVey's books, "Satanic Bible" and "Satanic Rituals."
