Abstract (Document Summary)

Mary Boyle, his teacher at Avery Coonley School, recalled: "We were counting the class and I said, `There are 16 boys and 13 girls. I wonder how many?' He said `29' and never batted an eye."

How the teaching staff is responding to the educational needs of Jamie Holzhauer is one of the hallmarks of Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove. The school emphasizes acceleration and enrichment for superbright children from the age of 3 through 8th grade. Its teachers pride themselves on discovering the unique interests and talents of youngsters, then nurturing and inspiring them to reach for the academic stars.

The U.S. Department of Education named Avery Coonley as one 17 of Illinois winners of excellence awards. The 17 Illinois schools were among 287 public and private elementary schools in the nation named as winners in the 1987-88 School Recognition Program for excellence in student success, school philosophy, curriculum, leadership and climate.
