A pair of Avery Coonley School (Downers Grove) students were on the Illinois Mathcounts team that won 2d place in a national competition recently held in Washington, D.C. Jonathan Hayward and Ritesh Shah were two of the four team members that received the highest ranking of any Illinois school ever in the national mathematics contest.

St. Francis High School (Wheaton) gave students academic awards during a ceremony held last month. The winners are: business, Laurie McAleese; English, Debra Shearer; fine arts, Kathy Kosman, Matt MacPhail, Mary Grabowski, Denise Vestuto and Joe Serio; foreign language, Debra Shearer, Matt MacPhail and Michael Michalak; math, Kate Kearney; newspaper, Al Tubinas and Debra Shearer; physical education, Tim Hughes and Brenda Muskus; religion, Jason Gilroy; science, Ed Quigley and Joe Benco; social studies, Margaret Loebig; yearbook, Brenda Davis and Kathy McCoy; Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Team, Ed Quigley; DAR Outstanding American History Student, Debra Shearer; DAR Good Citizen Award, Brenda Muskus; U.S. Army National Scholar Athlete, Rob Sanchez and Erin Eckenrod; American Legion Awards, Tim Hughes, Erin Eckenrod, Brenda Muskus and David Feltes; and the Principal's Award, Chad Lane and Deborah Kruk.
