Wilfredo Vasquez of Puerto Rico retained his World Boxing Association bantamweight title Sunday by outpointing Japan's Takuya Muguruma on a 12-round split decision in Osaka, Japan.

One judge, Fritz Werner of the U.S., scored the fight even at 115 points; a second American, Patricia Garmen, carded it 117-112 for Vasquez; and Julio Roldan of Venezuela gave it to Muguruma 116-114.

Vasquez came out strong in the final round, but Muguruma, ranked fourth by the WBA, came back near the end and was connecting with hard right punches.
