Abstract (Document Summary)

Chalk up a sensational chart showing for the Australian band INXS, which this week scored two big breakthroughs on the American charts-its first No. 1 single and first Top 5 album.

On the singles list, the group's "Need You Tonight" took over the top spot from some pretty tough competition-Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" (now No. 4)-and held off the challenge of teen superstar Tiffany, whose "Could've Been" was No. 1 this week in radio airplay but could rise only from No. 3 to No. 2 overall.

"Need You Tonight" was only No. 2 in airplay, but wound up No. 1 overall thanks to its slight edge in record sales. The song's success makes INXS the first Aussie band to top the American singles charts since Men at Work did it in late 1982 with "Down Under."
