IN 1803 the United States bought a piece of land from France that was largely uninhabited and mostly unimproved. But it was a good buy anyway because it was a subdivider's dream and eventually became Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, as well as most of Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Minnesota.
