YANKEES ARE DANDY PETTITTE HELPS MAKE IT A SWEEP
[CHICAGOLAND NORTH Edition]

Chicago, Ill.
Andy Pettitte had other things on his mind when the World Series began. But Pettitte gave the San Diego Padres and their fans one last bad memory to dwell upon this winter. Pettitte, who had been the New York Yankees' Opening Day starter, was pushed to the rear of the rotation because of both his poor second half and a trip to Texas to be with his father, who underwent heart surgery late last week. He collected himself to outpitch Padres ace Kevin Brown on Closing Day. Pettitte and relievers Jeff Nelson and Mariano Rivera combined on a seven-hitter as the Yankees beat San Diego 3-0 on Wednesday night, completing their four-game sweep in the 94th World Series before 65,427 at Qualcomm Stadium. They claimed their 24th world championship and 125th victory of this season by scratching out one run against Brown in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth.
