A study found that people near the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have a higher risk of some cancers, but saw no solid evidence that radiation from the plant's 1979 accident was a factor, its authors said Friday. The study, which reviewed hospital records of 160,000 people living within 10 miles of the plant, also found no significant relation between exposure to radiation during the accident and childhood cancers or leukemia. But two authors of the report, Columbia University epidemiologist Maureen Hatch and Three Mile Island Public Health Fund investigator Dr. Jan Beyea, acknowledged that some findings showed increased cancer risks. They said those risks did not appear linked to the accident. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction or distribution is prohibited without permission.
