Apple Computer Inc., reacting to criticism that its Macintosh personal computers have been too expensive, unveiled a $999 machine Monday intended to drive the company's growth. "From this moment forward, the Macintosh will reach more people than ever before," John Sculley, chairman and chief executive, told some 1,500 people at a press conference in an Apple plant. In addition to the under-$1,000 Macintosh Classic, Apple introduced the Macintosh LC, a color computer with a list price of $2,499, and the Macintosh IIsi, for $3,769. Like most personal computers, the new Macs are expected to be widely discounted. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
