Chicago, Ill.
[Barack Obama]'s declaration came days after the woman [Peter Fitzgerald] defeated for the seat in 1998, former Democratic U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley- Braun, said she would bypass a Senate run and instead consider a bid for the presidential nomination. Obama and Moseley-Braun are African- American. Obama had previously told acquaintances that he would not challenge her if she tried to reclaim her old seat. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
