Singer Frank Sinatra underwent emergency surgery Sunday for diverticulitis, a painful intestinal inflammation, a hospital spokesman said.

Sinatra had been appearing in Atlantic City at the Golden Nugget casino, but canceled further shows when the ailment struck, his spokesman, Lee Solters, said Sunday in Los Angeles.
