The third time was the charm for "Red, Red Wine," which this week became the only reggae-styled song in pop history to hit No. 1 on the singles' charts-and it did it more than four years after it was first released.

Back in March of '84, the British group UB40 (the name was inspired by the lettering on an unemployment benefit form) peaked at No. 34 with the very same version of "Red, Red Wine," which spent 15 weeks on the charts. But a far different styling flopped in 1968 for its writer, Neil Diamond, who only got to No. 65.

This time around, "Red, Red Wine" took just 10 weeks to move all the way to the top spot. And the song's new-found popularity helped UB40 on the album charts, too, where its "Labour of Love" burst into the Top 20 this week at No. 18 after months of not even being in the Top 40.
