On the main singles chart, jazz artist Bobby McFerrin moved up from No. 4 to grab his first No. 1 pop title with "Don't Worry, Be Happy," which is featured on both the "Cocktail" soundtrack and on his own "Simple Pleasures" LP. ("Simple Pleasures" also had a banner week, zipping from No. 20 to No. 12 on the pop album chart and from No. 8 to No. 4 on the compact disc list.)

Def Leppard had better success on the singles' list, where its "Love Bites" jumped from No. 9 to No. 5 this week and should make the top three next week. Other big movers: Peter Cetera's "One Good Woman" (up from No. 11 to No. 7, and in its fourth week at No. 1 on the adult contemporary list); Cheap Trick's "Don't Be Cruel" (from No. 15 to No. 10); Steve Winwood's "Don't You Know What the Nights Can Do?" (from No. 27 to No. 20); and Phil Collins' "Groovy Kind of Love" (from No. 27 to No. 20, and already No. 1 on the British charts).
