Back in the '70s, the Chicago-based group Cheap Trick was a major power on the album-rock scene, but never made much of a dent on the pop singles' charts. The group's only real success came in May of '79, when the catchy "I Want You to Want Me" peaked at No. 7; no other song even made the Top 20.

But suddenly, the "original" Cheap Trick-Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Bun E. Carlos and Tom Petersson-got back together for another assault on the charts. The result: "The Flame," a torchy ballad that is far removed from the punk-influenced sound of "I Want You to Want Me." And this week, "The Flame" moved up from No. 3 to give the band its first No. 1 single. (Dropping all the way to No. 5 was Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana," which was champ for only one week.)
