ANTIBIOTIC FOR FUNGAL INFECTIONS IS RECALLED
[SPORTS FINAL, C Edition]

Chicago, Ill.
LyphoMed Inc. said Friday it is voluntarily recalling all lots of an antibiotic used to treat fungal infections after learning that a supplier's contamination of the drug's raw material caused an increase in adverse reactions. The recalled antibiotic, called amphotericin B, is used to treat systemic infections found in some forms of meningitis and some infections associated with AIDS. After the Food and Drug Administration was told of an increased number of adverse side effects, such as high fever and severe chills, LyphoMed preliminarily traced the problem to the raw material provided by a European supplier, said John Kapoor, LyphoMed's chairman.
