`Upstarts' upstage Madonna
[NORTH SPORTS FINAL, CN Edition]

Chicago, Ill.
On the LP list, L.A. rapper Tone Loc scored his first pop No. 1 with "Loc-ed After Dark," which moved up from No. 3 to end the five-week reign of Debbie Gibson's "Electric Youth" (now No. 2). That makes Loc only the second artist in pop history to hit No. 1 with a rap album (the Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill" was the first) and the first to have two Top 10 singles ("Wild Thing" peaked at No. 2 a few months ago, and "Funky Cold Medina" jumped from No. 10 to No. 7 this week). But Madonna is threatening from the No. 3 spot on both lists; she's likely to break through next week with at least five different No. 1 titles. And even though she didn't quite reach the big prizes this week, she already is champ on two lists: compact discs, where her "Prayer" album bumped off the Cannibals' "The Raw & the Cooked"; and dance club play, where the "Prayer" single took just four weeks to hit No. 1.
