Bangles make pop history with `Eternal Flame'
[NORTH SPORTS FINAL, CN Edition]
Chicago Tribune (pre-1997 Fulltext)
-
Chicago, Ill.
Two years ago, when the Bangles hit No. 1 with "Walk Like an Egyptian," they became the first all-female group to top the singles' charts since such '60s powers as the Angels, the Chiffons and the Shangri-Las. (In 1982, the Go-Gos just missed with "We Got the Beat," which peaked at No. 2.) Now, the L.A.-based Bangles have made a little more pop history by becoming only the third "girl group" to have scored multiple No. 1s. (The others are the Supremes, who had 12, and the Shirelles, with 2.) The song that did it for them: "Eternal Flame," a big ballad that is much more in the spirit of those old '60s songs than "Egyptian," which has a very '80s sound.
