Martika's `Toy Soldiers' hangs tough to keep top spot
[NORTH SPORTS FINAL, CN Edition]
Chicago Tribune (pre-1997 Fulltext)
-
Chicago, Ill.
This week, Martika's "Toy Soldiers" survived a close chart battle with Prince's "Batdance" (now No. 2) to become the first single in months to be able to notch two straight weeks as champ. The last dominant No. 1 was Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl," which spent two weeks at the top in late May. But then came an unusually long run of songs that will rank in chart history as "one-week wonders": Michael Damian's "Rock On," Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings," New Kids on the Block's "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," Richard Marx's "Satisfied," Milli Vanilli's "Baby Don't Forget My Number," Fine Young Cannibals' "Good Thing," and Simply Red's "If You Don't Know Me By Now."
