- Pro football: Indianapolis Colts running back Eric Dickerson has sued the National Football League Players Association, claiming invasion of privacy. The lawsuit, filed in Marion County, Ind., Circuit Court on April 12 and amended on May 5, also names Cincinnati-based toy manufacturer Kenner Products and Los Angeles-based software development company Tecmo Inc., as defendants. At the heart of the lawsuit are licensing agreements between the two companies and the NFLPA which "purportedly authorizes the defendants . . . to use or otherwise exploit (Dickerson's) name, picture, likeness and signature, or any of them, for its own benefit." Kenner manufactures a series of molded plastic figurines, the "Starting Lineup" collection, modeled after players from each of the 28 NFL clubs. Dickerson is one of five Colts in the series. Tecmo Inc. created the software for "Tecmo Bowl," a videocassette-based football action game. The lawsuit contends there has never been a valid license, either express or implied, between Dickerson and the NFLPA granting the union permission to ". . . offer, sell or grant the defendants any rights to (Dickerson's) name, picture, likeness or signature."
