Abstract (Document Summary)

Last week, the pop singles chart had an unlikely leader in soap opera star Michael Damian, who, after years of trying and failing to crack the Top 40, finally went all the way to No. 1 with "Rock On."

Just as surprising is this week's champ, Bette Midler, who hadn't had a hit since her "The Rose" movie theme went to No. 3 in 1980. But now Miss M finally has her first No. 1 single, thanks to the success of another movie song, "Wind Beneath My Wings" (from the "Beaches" soundtrack), which moved up from No. 3 to become the most popular record in America.
