Abstract (Document Summary)

On the pop singles' chart, Madonna's "Prayer" jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 ahead of last week's champ, Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" (now No. 2), which in any other week would have had no trouble hanging on to the top spot. But there was just no stopping "Prayer," which took just six weeks to streak to No. 1, making it the fastest-rising song this year. "Prayer" also took over the top spot on the dance singles' list, and held on to its No. 1 ranking in dance club play.

On the LP list, "Prayer" also moved up from No. 3 to end the one-week reign of Tone Loc's "Loc-ed After Dark" (now No. 2). The fifth No. 1 of Madonna's great chart week came on the compact disc list, where "Prayer" is now in its second week as champ.
