Abstract (Document Summary)

Dennis Byrd of the New York Jets got good news of "guarded optimism" Monday after suffering a broke neck during a collision with a teammate Sunday that left the National Football League stunned and anxious.

Byrd has some feeling in his legs and has demonstrated slight movement in his toes and fingers, doctors reported Monday, although he remains paralyzed in his legs and lower arms. There are plans to operate on Byrd's neck on Wednesday and doctors would not rule out the possibility he could walk again.

Following the paralyzing injury to Mike Utley of the Detroit Lions by one year and two weeks, Byrd's accident left the Jets in tears at the end of a traumatic week. Earlier, wide receiver Al Toon had retired because a series of concussions had left him dizzy and groggy, much to the alarm of teammates.
