Abstract (Document Summary)

Every Sunday evening, the limos and sports cars line up along a bleak stretch of Hollywood for an evening with Jenifer Lewis of "The Diva Is Dismissed."

"Divas are usually rich, famous and disgusting," said Lewis. "I was a poor diva. A diva is someone who pretends to know who they are and look fabulous doing it! That was me."

After years on the New York cabaret circuit and the Broadway stage, Lewis has dismissed what she calls her years of divadom and is on the edge of just plain stardom. She portrays Tina Turner's mother, Zelma Bullock, in "What's Love Got to Do With It?" a gritty new film about Ike and Tina Turner.
