Abstract (Document Summary)

On Sept. 26, Jack LaLanne, the iron-pumping exercise evangelist responsible for shaping physiques and starting the entire physical fitness movement in America, turns 80 years old.

LaLanne's wife, Elaine, was a chain-smoking junk-food junkie when she and Jack met in 1952. "First he inspired me, then he perspired me," says the shapely 68-year-old. They dated for six years and were married 35 years ago. Wholeheartedly sharing her husband's enthusiasm for just about everything, she's a fitness expert in her own right. Today, more than ever, they're a team.

One doesn't relax when visiting the LaLanne household. Jack believes that muscle-toning exercises can-and should-be done by anyone, anywhere, anytime. In the middle of a conversation he'll startle a visitor with "SIT! Hold on to the seat of your chair. Scoot down like you're sitting on your tail bone. Put your legs in the air. Pretend you're pedaling a bike. Make those circles larger. Larger! Go faster. Faster! Get higher. Higher. Pump like crazy! Go! Go! Go!"
